संस्थेचा शतकोत्तर प्रवासA Journey of Over a Century
दिनांक २१ जानेवारी १९२१ रोजी, म्हणजेच १०० वर्षांपूर्वी, जेव्हा समाजपरिवर्तनाची अत्यंत गरज होती, अशा काळात "स्त्रियांनी चालवलेली, स्त्रिया व मुलांच्या सर्वांगीण विकासासाठी" असणारी क्रांतिकारी संस्था म्हणून 'सरस्वती मंदिर'ची स्थापना झाली.
स्थापना व प्रेरणा
१९२१ साली स्त्री शिक्षण प्रसारक मंडळाचे श्री. दादासाहेब ओगले, ल. वा. परांजपे व डॉ. चोळकर यांच्या उपस्थितीत, त्यांच्या प्रेरणेतून या संस्थेची पायाभरणी झाली. श्रीमती सुंदरबाई साने या संस्थेच्या पहिल्या अध्यक्षा होत्या.
ऐतिहासिक पार्श्वभूमी व उद्दिष्टे
सरस्वती मंदिरची स्थापना अशा विपरीत काळात झाली जेव्हा स्त्रियांना समाजात दुय्यम स्थान होते, त्यांचे कार्यक्षेत्र मर्यादित होते आणि त्या औपचारिक शिक्षणापासून वंचित होत्या. स्वतःचे मत मांडण्याचा अधिकार नसलेल्या त्या काळात महिलांमध्ये जागृती व्हावी, त्यांना स्वतःच्या कर्तृत्वाची जाणीव व्हावी आणि त्यांच्या सामाजिक जाणिवांचा विकास व्हावा, तसेच मुलांचा सर्वांगीण विकास व्हावा, या उदात्त हेतूने ही संस्था सुरू झाली.
सामाजिक व राष्ट्रीय योगदान
सुरुवातीच्या काळात संस्थेत अनेक विषयांवर बौद्धिक चर्चा होत असत. याशिवाय गरीब मुलांना भोजन देणे, उद्योग मार्गदर्शन करणे यांसारखे सामाजिक उपक्रम सातत्याने राबवले गेले. स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीने भारलेल्या त्या काळात, संस्थेने आपल्या परीने या राष्ट्रीय कार्यात खारीचा वाटा उचलला आणि चळवळीला मोलाची मदत केली.
प्रगती आणि स्वतःची वास्तू
कालानुरूप समाजाला आवश्यक असलेल्या अनेक नवनवीन प्रवृत्ती आणि उपक्रम संस्थेने सुरू केले. १९५८ मध्ये नागपूर सुधार प्रन्यास (NIT) कडून संस्थेसाठी जागा लीजवर घेण्यात आली आणि १९६० मध्ये संस्थेची स्वतःची देखणी इमारत बांधून तयार झाली. या हक्काच्या वास्तूतून कारभार सुरू झाल्यानंतर अनेक विस्तारवादी कल्पनांना मूर्त रूप आले.
आज ही संस्था आपल्या गौरवशाली इतिहासाचा वारसा जपत, स्वतःच्या भव्य वास्तूत मोठ्या दिमाखात उभी असून अविरत समाजसेवा करत आहे.
On 21 January 1921 — more than a hundred years ago, at a time when social reform was needed most — 'Saraswati Mandir' was founded as a revolutionary institution "run by women, for the all-round development of women and children."
Foundation and Inspiration
The institution was founded in 1921 with the inspiration and in the presence of Shri Dadasaheb Ogale, L. V. Paranjape and Dr. Cholkar of the Stri Shikshan Prasarak Mandal. Smt. Sundarbai Sane was its first President.
Historical Background and Objectives
Saraswati Mandir was established in adverse times, when women held a secondary place in society, their sphere of activity was restricted, and they were deprived of formal education. In an era when women had no right even to voice their opinions, this institution was started with the noble aim of awakening women, making them aware of their own abilities, developing their social consciousness, and helping children in their overall development.
Social and National Contribution
In its early years the institution hosted intellectual discussions on many subjects, and consistently ran social initiatives such as feeding poor children and providing vocational guidance. In those days charged with the freedom movement, the institution contributed its share to the national cause and rendered valuable help to the movement.
Progress and Its Own Building
Over time the institution launched many new initiatives that society needed. In 1958 land was taken on lease from the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), and in 1960 the institution's own handsome building was completed. Once it began functioning from these premises, many ideas for expansion took concrete shape.
Today, preserving the legacy of its glorious history, the institution stands proudly in its own grand building and continues its unbroken service to society.
